Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico Riserva “Mosaico” 2017
Wine Description
The Amarone Riserva Mosaico is the top of Benedetti La Villa's Mosaico line, named for the Roman mosaic floors found beneath the estate's fields in 1887 and now partly shown in Verona. As the appellation rules require of a riserva, the wine ages at least four years before release, and the house gives it the full classical treatment: Corvina led fruit dried in the lofts, slow fermentation, then a long stay in wood and bottle.
The result deepens the family's Amarone register: dried cherry and plum compote, coffee, cocoa and nutmeg with a balsamic line and a dense, warming palate whose tannins have had time to settle. It is the bottle to choose when the occasion asks for patience already done.
Decant for an hour and serve at 16 to 18 °C with braised game, pastissada de caval or long aged cheeses; it also stands happily on its own after dinner.
Winery
The Benedetti family has grown vines at La Villa in Negrar since the nineteenth century, and the estate is now run by the brothers Simone and Matteo, who learned the work from their father Adriano and their grandfather before him. The property carries an unusual layer of history: in 1887 a Roman villa of the second and third century was found seven metres beneath the fields, and its mosaic floors, partly displayed in Verona's museum of ancient art, gave the family's Mosaico line its name. The cellar pairs traditional drying lofts and long wood aging with modern equipment.
