About Piedmont Wines
Piedmont, at the foot of the Alps in the northwest, is for many the summit of Italian wine, and its noble grape is Nebbiolo. In the Langhe hills around Alba, Nebbiolo makes Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG, powerful, perfumed reds of tar and roses that age for decades. Everyday drinking comes from Barbera, at its best in Barbera d'Asti DOCG, and from the softer Dolcetto. The white side offers dry Gavi DOCG from Cortese and the sweet, grapey Moscato d'Asti DOCG. Roero DOCG, across the Tanaro river, gives lighter Nebbiolo and the fragrant white Arneis. The region prizes single vineyard bottlings, and its crus are mapped with almost Burgundian care. Fog, or nebbia, gives Nebbiolo its name and the late ripening grape its long autumn hang time. From the grandeur of Barolo to a glass of frothy Moscato, Piedmont sets a benchmark few regions match.
