Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Prometeo” 2016
Luca Maroni 97James Suckling 94
Wine Description
Prometeo is Ca' Botta's statement Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, made entirely from dried grapes and, unusually for the category, without added sulfites.
Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Corvinone go through full appassimento, ferment in the estate's patented Fermentino Ca' Botta tank, built to pull maximum extract from the fruit, and then mature in French barriques.
The result is a heavyweight at 17%: spice and black pepper, cocoa and licorice over red berries, cherry, plum and chocolate, full and dense on the palate with powerful tannins, balanced acidity and a fresh, persistent finish.
The 2016 is drinking well now and has plenty of good years still ahead of it.
Serve at 18 °C after a long decant, with braised beef cheeks, game stews or aged cheeses; it is also one of those Amarones that can stand alone after dinner, treated as a meditation wine.
Winery
Tenute Ca' Botta has worked the hills northeast of Verona since 2008, with its base at Grezzana and vineyards climbing to around 500 meters. The house identity is built entirely around dried grapes: nearly every red passes through appassimento, and fermentation happens in the estate's own patented Fermentino Ca' Botta tank, designed to draw unusually high extract and body from the fruit. The results are dense, dark, sweetly spiced wines in a firmly modern register, some made without added sulfites, that have found an audience well beyond the Veneto.
