About Aosta Valley Wines
Valle d'Aosta is Italy's smallest region, a high alpine valley in the northwest where vineyards climb to some of the highest altitudes in Europe. Almost everything falls under the single Valle d'Aosta DOC, which covers a long list of grapes and village names. Reds come from native varieties such as Petit Rouge, Fumin and Cornalin, and from Nebbiolo, known here as Picotener. At the top of the valley, Prié Blanc makes the bracing white Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle from ungrafted vines above 1,000 metres. The steep, sunny slopes and thin mountain air give the wines vivid freshness and clarity. French, Italian and Swiss influences meet here, reflected in both grapes and labels. Volumes are tiny and much of the wine stays in the valley or its restaurants. For collectors of rare alpine bottlings, Valle d'Aosta is a quiet treasure.
