About Basilicata Wines
Basilicata is a small, mountainous region in the south, and almost all of its fame comes from a single hill: the extinct volcano Monte Vulture. Aglianico del Vulture DOC grows on dark volcanic soils at altitude, giving reds with firm tannin, bright acidity and notes of black cherry, ash and spice. The best sites and longer ageing earn the Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG. These are structured wines built to age, closer in spirit to fine Barolo or Taurasi than to easy southern reds. The wide day to night temperature swing on the volcano keeps freshness in a hot climate. Old vines, some ungrafted, still work the sandy slopes around Rionero, Barile and Ripacandida. Small producers dominate, and quantities are modest, so the wines are prized by those who seek them out. A little white and rosato is made from Aglianico and local varieties, but the red is the region's calling card.
Prices are for take away and shipping. The wine bar serves from its own list.
