About Liguria Wines
Liguria is a thin arc of coast between the mountains and the sea, and its vineyards cling to some of the steepest terraces in Italy. Whites lead here, from crisp, saline Vermentino and the rounder Pigato to the dramatic Cinque Terre DOC grown on dry stone walls above the water. The region's most prized red is Rossese di Dolceacqua DOC, a pale, fragrant, elegant wine from the western Riviera. Sciacchetrà, the rare sweet passito of the Cinque Terre, is a local treasure. Farming these terraces is done largely by hand, which keeps volumes tiny and prices firm. Sea breezes and poor, rocky soils give the whites their salty freshness and the reds their delicacy. Much of the wine never leaves the region, drunk young with the local seafood and pesto. For visitors it is one of Italy's most distinctive and hard won wine landscapes.
