Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2022
Wine Description
This is Benedetti La Villa's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, the wine the Negrar estate is built around. The grapes, hand picked at full ripeness from the Corvina led varieties of the valley, spend a few months drying in the family's lofts before a slow fermentation in steel and a stay in small and medium sized barrels, with further refinement in bottle.
The producer's own notes read like a map of good Amarone: cherry and morello cherry, plum compote, coffee, cocoa, nutmeg and a balsamic accent over a garnet red robe. The 2022 is very young for the category; it is already generous, but an hour in the decanter opens it considerably and the best years are ahead.
Serve at 16 to 18 °C with dishes of real weight: braised beef in Amarone, pastissada de caval, game birds, or a piece of aged Monte Veronese when the meal winds down. It is a wine for the table, not the aperitif shelf.
Winery
The Benedetti family has grown vines at La Villa in Negrar since the nineteenth century, and the estate is now run by the brothers Simone and Matteo, who learned the work from their father Adriano and their grandfather before him. The property carries an unusual layer of history: in 1887 a Roman villa of the second and third century was found seven metres beneath the fields, and its mosaic floors, partly displayed in Verona's museum of ancient art, gave the family's Mosaico line its name. The cellar pairs traditional drying lofts and long wood aging with modern equipment.
