About Sardinia Wines
Sardinia is a large Mediterranean island with a wine culture shaped by centuries of Spanish rule. Its finest white is Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, from granite soils in the north, a saline, aromatic wine that suits the island's seafood. The main red is Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, the local name for Grenache, giving warm, herb scented wines from old, drought hardened vines. In the southwest, Carignano del Sulcis DOC makes deep reds from bush vines grown on sand. Cannonau is often linked to the island's famous longevity, and its old vines yield concentrated, structured wines. Vermentino also appears as a broader DOC across the island in a fresher, everyday style. The rare, oxidative Vernaccia di Oristano recalls a Sardinian answer to Sherry. Sea, sun and poor soils give Sardinian wines their distinctive Mediterranean depth and salinity.
