About Sicily Wines
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, has become one of Italy's most exciting wine regions. The clearest expression of its rise is Etna, where Nerello Mascalese grown on the active volcano gives pale, high altitude reds often compared to fine Burgundy or Barolo. The island's only DOCG is Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a bright blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato from the southeast. Nero d'Avola remains the workhorse red, ripe and full bodied across the island. Etna's black volcanic soils, old ungrafted vines and cool nights give wines of unusual freshness and mineral drive. Whites are led by Carricante on Etna and Grillo, Catarratto and Inzolia elsewhere. Marsala, the historic fortified wine of the west, is enjoying a quality revival. From the fortified tradition to volcanic reds, Sicily now offers as much variety as any region in Italy.
