About Molise Wines
Molise is Italy's second smallest region and one of its least known for wine, tucked between Abruzzo, Puglia and the Adriatic. Much of the planting is Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Aglianico, familiar from neighbouring regions. Its own identity rests on Tintilia del Molise DOC, a native red grape rescued from near disappearance that gives spicy, firm, high altitude wines. The broader Biferno DOC covers red, white and rosato from the Biferno valley. Tintilia grows best on higher inland hills, where cool nights preserve its acidity and dark, peppery character. A handful of committed producers have driven the grape's revival over the past two decades. Volumes are small and much of the wine is enjoyed locally. For adventurous drinkers, Tintilia is the reason to look at Molise.
