About Lazio Wines
Lazio, the region around Rome, has long supplied the capital with easy white wine, but its ambitions now reach further. Frascati DOC, from the volcanic Castelli Romani hills southeast of the city, is the best known name, a soft white based on Malvasia and Trebbiano. The region's finest red is Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, a spicy, dark fruited wine from the native Cesanese grape. Volcanic soils and lake basins give the wines freshness in a warm climate. A quality minded generation is reviving old varieties and cutting the high yields that once defined the area. Malvasia Puntinata, the better local Malvasia, adds texture and perfume to serious whites. Around Lake Bolsena, Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone carries one of Italy's most quoted wine legends. The overall picture is a region moving from quantity toward character, with Cesanese as its rising red star.
