Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Mithas” 2015
Wine Description
Mithas is Corte Sant'Alda's Amarone selection, the wine at the top of Marinella Camerani's biodynamically farmed estate in the Val di Mezzane. It is made the way the whole house works: hand picked fruit from limestone rich hillside parcels, months of drying as is traditional for Amarone, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and unhurried aging in oak.
The style trades bombast for detail: dried cherry and orange peel, balsamic herbs, tobacco and warm earth, with acidity that keeps the concentration standing upright. With over a decade in bottle, the 2012 has settled into a mature, open phase, its tannins fine and its aromatics turning tertiary. Serve it at 17 to 18 °C after a gentle decant for sediment, with braised game, brasato, mature Monte Veronese or a quiet cheese course; in Venice it would honour fegato alla veneziana. Drink it over the coming years, without hurry and without much company.
Winery
Corte Sant'Alda sits in the Val di Mezzane, the quieter eastern valley of the Valpolicella, where Marinella Camerani has farmed since the mid 1980s. The vineyards lie between 200 and 350 metres on limestone rich soils, in parcels named Campi Magri, Prà Alto, Retratto and Monte Tombole, worked biodynamically and taken into the cellar with a light hand: hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and aging in oak of varied size and age. The range runs from Valpolicella through the Campi Magri ripasso to two Amarones, Valmezzane and the estate selection Mithas.
