Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2020
Wine Description
Le Bignele's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico comes from the family's hillside plots around Valgatara in Marano di Valpolicella. The blend is Corvina and Corvinone at 70% with Rondinella 25% and a drop of Molinara, the old local variety few still keep. Hand picked bunches dry for at least 90 days before a winter fermentation, and the wine then spends a minimum of three years in 25 to 38 hectolitre oak casks plus six months in bottle.
The glass moves from cherries in spirit to nutmeg, liquorice, tobacco and cocoa bean, with real structure wrapped in a soft, velvety texture. The 2018 is drinking well now and will develop for years yet. The house suggests serving it cooler than most Amarone, at 14 to 16 °C in large glasses; decant it an hour ahead and give it braised beef, game or aged Monte Veronese, or in Venice fegato alla veneziana.
Winery
Le Bignele is the Aldrighetti family farm above Valgatara in Marano di Valpolicella, on hills the family has worked since 1818. Nine hectares spread across Marano, Negrar and San Pietro in Cariano, with vines of 35 to 40 years on clay and limestone soils trained to the traditional pergola veronese. Luigi and his brother Angelo look after vineyard and cellar while the next generation, Nicola, Silvia and Cecilia, runs production and welcomes visitors. The wines stay close to the classic Valpolicella grammar: Valpolicella, Superiore, Ripasso, Amarone and a small Recioto.
