Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Costasera” 2021
Wine Description
Costasera is the Amarone that carries Masi's name around the world, grown on slopes of the Valpolicella Classica that face west and southwest and keep the last light of the day, the evening hillside or costa sera that gives the wine its name. The blend is Corvina 70%, Rondinella 25% and Molinara 5%; after harvest the bunches rest on drying racks for three to four months, and the finished wine matures for 28 to 30 months in stainless steel and large Slavonian oak casks.
The style stays classical: cherry and plum jam, cinnamon and clove, velvety tannins and a warm, gently spiced finish at around 15% alcohol. The 2021 is a young release with a long life ahead; give it a generous hour of air. Serve it at 18 °C with pastissada de caval, the old Veronese stew, with braised beef cheek, or with fegato alla veneziana from the Venetian kitchen; it also stands happily on its own with aged Monte Veronese after dinner.
Winery
Masi takes its name from the Vaio dei Masi, the small valley in the Valpolicella Classica bought by the Boscaini family at the end of the eighteenth century, and it is still family run after seven generations. The house built its name on appassimento, the winter drying of grapes for Amarone and Recioto, which its technical group has studied and refined for decades, and on the recovery of old Veronese varieties such as Oseleta. Alongside the widely exported Costasera it bottles two historic cru Amarones, Campolongo di Torbe and Mazzano, and tends the vineyards of the Serego Alighieri estate, home of the descendants of the poet Dante.
