Venusa Bianco 2024
Wine Description
Venusa Bianco brings the Venissa project's rare Dorona grape to a wine made for earlier drinking. Dorona, the golden variety of the Venetian islands that nearly disappeared after the 1966 flood, grows here in saline soil at the edge of the lagoon, tended by hand on Mazzorbo. The must ferments on its skins, then the wine rests in amphora and glass before release. The result is dry and firm: citrus peel, quince and a light salty note that comes straight from the tidal ground, with fresh acidity keeping it lively. It is a natural partner for lagoon cooking: risotto di gò, grilled fish, moleche in season, or simply cicchetti with baccalà mantecato. Serve at 10 to 12 °C; no decanting needed.
Winery
Venissa is a wine project of the Bisol family on the island of Mazzorbo in the Venetian lagoon, a short walk from Burano. After a handful of surviving Dorona vines were found on the islands, the family replanted this native golden grape inside a walled medieval vineyard, and today the estate farms some of the lowest lying vines in the world, at and slightly below sea level in saline, tidal ground. Production is tiny and every stage is done by hand. Alongside the gold leaf labelled Venissa Bianco, the Venusa wines carry the taste of the lagoon to the table.
