About Orto di Venezia

History
Orto di Venezia is a small wine estate on Sant'Erasmo, an island in the Venetian lagoon. The estate says the land was already used for winemaking around 1700, when a noblemen's wine was made there that the Doges and Casanova were said to appreciate. Local records place vineyards on the island as far back as the 16th century, but the 1966 flood nearly ended them.
The present project belongs to the Thoulouze family. Press reports say Michel Thoulouze, born in France, started it around 2001.
The land and the vineyards
The vines grow on the island among the lagoon's channels. They are planted franco di piedi, which means on their own roots without grafting, using traditional and earth friendly methods. The family has revived old drainage systems that rely on the natural tides of the lagoon. The grapes are described as antique Italian varieties.
The wines
The estate makes one wine, the Orto di Venezia white. A Swiss importer lists the blend as 60 percent Malvasia Istriana, 30 percent Vermentino and 10 percent Fiano, made without barrel ageing. Production is small, around 14,000 to 16,000 bottles. The same importer says Claude Bourguignon, known for work with Domaine de la Romanee Conti, has advised on the vinification.
Today
The estate keeps a single wine and a single address, in via delle Motte on Sant'Erasmo.
