“Orto di Venezia” 2025
Wine Description
Orto di Venezia is produced by the Thoulouze family on the island of Sant’Erasmo in the northern Venice Lagoon, making it the only wine grown within the boundaries of the lagoon itself. The wine is a blend dominated by Malvasia Istriana with proportions of Vermentino and Fiano, all grown on ungrafted vines without ploughing or chemical inputs. An ancient drainage system channels rainwater through the vineyard via canals that are flushed at low tide, while cover crops of barley, oats, and radish maintain soil balance. The soils are clay-rich with marine and dolomitic sediments, giving the wine a distinctive saline mineral character. Vinification is carried out without barrel ageing to preserve the aromatic freshness of the grapes. The resulting wine is pale straw with greenish highlights, clean, aromatic, and firmly mineral on the finish.
