Valpolicella DOC Superiore 2019
Wine Description
Ferragù's Valpolicella Superiore is the entry into an estate otherwise given over to Amarone, and it drinks like it: a Superiore of real substance from old family vines in the Val d'Illasi. As is traditional for the appellation, Corvina leads the local blend, and Superiore rules ask for higher ripeness and at least a year of aging before release.
Expect dark cherry and plum with black pepper and a balsamic thread, medium full body, ripe tannins and the savoury grip of hillside fruit. It is ready on release and comfortable for several years after. Serve at 16 to 18 °C with bigoli with duck ragù, roast guinea fowl, sausage and polenta or a rare steak; in Venice it makes an honest partner for fegato alla veneziana. Half an hour of air helps, though nobody at the table ever seems willing to wait that long.
Winery
Carlo Ferragù farms about eight hectares of red varieties in the Val d'Illasi, east of Verona, at roughly 240 metres, with a further hectare of olive trees. He runs the estate with his brothers Ornello and Angelo from a cellar that pairs an old Romanesque stone farmhouse with modern equipment, and the vines behind the Amarone average around 55 years of age. Production is small and pointed at reds of scale: a Valpolicella Superiore, the estate Amarone and an Amarone Riserva grown on a single hectare at Cellore d'Illasi.
