Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico Superiore 2023
Wine Description
Tommasi's Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore is the house bridge between Valpolicella and Amarone, made the traditional way: after its first fermentation the young wine returns to the Amarone pomace for twelve to thirteen days of second fermentation, gaining color, depth and a dried cherry accent. The blend is Corvina 70%, Rondinella 25% and Corvinone 5%, and the wine ages at least eighteen months in 65 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks plus six months in bottle.
At 13.5% it remains a dinner red: cherry jam, tobacco and black pepper on the nose, a full but silky palate and a long, gently spicy finish. It is made to drink on release and over the following five or six years. Serve it at 16 to 18 °C after a brief decant, with bigoli in salsa, boiled or braised meats with cren, or a plain grilled steak.
Winery
Tommasi has been a family house since 1902, when Giacomo Tommasi bought his first vineyard in the Valpolicella Classica north of Verona. Four generations later the family farms hundreds of hectares, including over a hundred in the Classica hills around Pedemonte, yet the cellar still turns around historic sites such as Ca' Florian, Rafael on Monte Masua and the Conca d'Oro. The style is classically Veronese: long appassimento, fermentation on indigenous yeasts, patient aging in large Slavonian oak casks, and a range that runs from easy drinking Valpolicella to one of the region's best known Amarone.
