Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Classico 2023
Wine Description
Monte Santoccio's Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore brings Nicola Ferrari's careful hand to the most Veronese of methods: the young Valpolicella is passed over the Amarone marcs for a second fermentation, as tradition asks, taking on color, body and a dried cherry accent. The fruit is Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella from the estate's three hectares of naturally farmed vines at Fumane, picked by hand and raised with patience in cask.
It lands where ripasso should: morello cherry and plum deepened by a dried fruit shade, soft spice and cocoa, medium full body and a fresh, dry finish that keeps it at the dinner table. It drinks well from the day of release and holds its shape for several years in the cellar. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, opened half an hour ahead, with bigoli with duck ragù, fegato alla veneziana with polenta, or grilled meats.
Winery
Monte Santoccio is the small Fumane estate of Nicola Ferrari, who started at twenty six in the cellar of Giuseppe Quintarelli and took from those years the habit of controlling every step, from vine to bottle. The property covers just over three hectares of owned vineyard in the Valpolicella Classica, farmed naturally and picked entirely by hand. The range stays deliberately short and traditional: Valpolicella Classico and Superiore, a ripasso, Amarone and the Recioto Stella, wines that aim at clarity, patience and honest value rather than size.
