Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC “Il Vegro” 2021
Wine Description
Il Vegro is Brigaldara's ripasso, and it shows the estate's Amarone pedigree in a wine made for the table rather than the cellar. The blend is Corvina 55%, Corvinone 25% and Rondinella 20%; after the first fermentation the young Valpolicella is refermented for about five days on the estate's own Amarone marcs with short, gentle pump overs, then aged eighteen months in large wooden casks, the traditional choice that adds breadth without covering the fruit.
At 14.5% it lands in ripasso's sweet spot: morello cherry and plum deepened by a dried fruit shade, soft spice, round tannins and enough freshness to stay a dinner wine rather than a statement. Drink it over the next several years at 16 to 18 °C. It is the red we reach for when a table orders bigoli with duck, guinea fowl, or anything slow cooked with tomato and herbs; it also handles a simple steak with ease.
Winery
Brigaldara has been in the Cesari family since 1928, centered on a historic estate at San Floriano in the Valpolicella Classica with additional vineyards in the Marcellise and Illasi valleys. Under Stefano Cesari and now his son Antonio, the house earned its reputation for Amarone, including the celebrated Case Vecie from high vineyards, while keeping the everyday wines serious: the Valpolicella, the ripasso Il Vegro and a small Recioto all show the same clean, classically Veronese hand.
