Orto di Venezia 2023
Wine Description
Orto di Venezia is a white wine produced on the island of San Erasmo in the Venetian Lagoon, a small plot of land historically known for supplying vegetables to the city of Venice. The wine is made from a blend dominated by Istrian Malvasia, an ancient Italian variety present in Venice since the 14th century, with varying proportions of Fiano and Vermentino selected according to each year’s harvest. The vines grow in clay-rich soils with marine and dolomitic sediments, influenced by the iodine-laden lagoon breeze, which shapes the wine’s mineral character. Vinification is carried out without barrel ageing in order to preserve the grape’s natural aromatic profile. The estate follows a non-interventionist approach to viticulture, with no ploughing or herbicides, and uses the island’s ancestral tidal drainage system to manage water in the vineyard.
