Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2020
Wine Description
Monte Santoccio's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is the wine Nicola Ferrari measures himself by, made from just over three hectares of naturally farmed vines at Fumane with the patience he learned in Giuseppe Quintarelli's cellar. Corvina and Corvinone lead with Rondinella, as is traditional in the Classica, and the hand picked bunches dry on racks through the winter before a slow fermentation and long aging in cask.
It drinks in the classical register: dried cherry and plum, tobacco, cocoa and balsamic spice, full bodied yet dry and composed, with freshness holding the frame together. The 2020 is young; an hour in a decanter opens it now, and it has the material to age well past a decade. Serve at 18 °C with braised beef in Amarone, roast game or aged Monte Veronese, and keep the last glass for a square of dark chocolate.
Winery
Monte Santoccio is the small Fumane estate of Nicola Ferrari, who started at twenty six in the cellar of Giuseppe Quintarelli and took from those years the habit of controlling every step, from vine to bottle. The property covers just over three hectares of owned vineyard in the Valpolicella Classica, farmed naturally and picked entirely by hand. The range stays deliberately short and traditional: Valpolicella Classico and Superiore, a ripasso, Amarone and the Recioto Stella, wines that aim at clarity, patience and honest value rather than size.
