Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2020
Wine Description
Monte Santoccio's Valpolicella Classico Superiore is the estate's serious everyday red, from just over three hectares of naturally farmed vines at Fumane in the Valpolicella Classica. Corvina and Corvinone lead with Rondinella, as is traditional for the appellation, and the Superiore designation brings a longer rest in the cellar than the simple Classico, giving the wine a little extra depth without losing its drive.
In the glass it is ripe morello cherry and red plum, dried herbs and white pepper, medium weight, polished tannins and a dry, savoury close. The 2020 is drinking well now and has the balance to hold for several more years. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, opened half an hour ahead, with bigoli with duck ragù, roast guinea fowl, sopressa with polenta or fegato alla veneziana; it is the kind of Valpolicella that keeps the table talking.
Winery
Monte Santoccio is the small Fumane estate of Nicola Ferrari, who started at twenty six in the cellar of Giuseppe Quintarelli and took from those years the habit of controlling every step, from vine to bottle. The property covers just over three hectares of owned vineyard in the Valpolicella Classica, farmed naturally and picked entirely by hand. The range stays deliberately short and traditional: Valpolicella Classico and Superiore, a ripasso, Amarone and the Recioto Stella, wines that aim at clarity, patience and honest value rather than size.
