Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico 2020
Wine Description
Giovanni Dindo's Amarone Classico is a Fumane wine through and through, from about five family farmed hectares on Monte Sant'Urbano. The blend keeps the old shape, Corvina 50%, Corvinone 25%, Rondinella 20% and Molinara 5%; the bunches dry about four months in the winery loft until they lose roughly 40% of their weight, then macerate slowly for 30 to 40 days at a cool 18 °C before three years of aging, half in French tonneaux and half in large oak casks.
The 2020 is generous at 16% yet finely drawn: cherry and white flowers over liquorice, caramel and tobacco, with velvety tannins and a long, warm finish. It drinks well now and will grow for years. Decant for an hour and serve at 18 °C with braised beef, pastissada de caval, risotto all'Amarone or aged Monte Veronese; it is the kind of small estate Amarone that converts people at the first glass.
Winery
Giovanni Dindo established his family winery in the 1960s in the hills of Fumane, and three generations later it remains a small, hands on estate of about five hectares on Monte Sant'Urbano, in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica. Every stage, from the rows to the drying loft to the cellar, is watched over by the family itself. The range stays deliberately short, Valpolicella Ripasso and Amarone above all, made the traditional Fumane way with long, cool macerations and patient aging in a mix of French tonneaux and large oak casks.
