Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Le Poiane” 2020
Wine Description
Le Poiane is Bolla's Amarone for the table, the label under which the house makes its most approachable version of Valpolicella's biggest wine. As is traditional for the appellation, the blend rests on Corvina and Corvinone with Rondinella in support, and the grapes spend the winter drying on racks before a slow fermentation and a rest in oak, the appassimento route that trades juice for concentration.
The style aims for the balanced middle of Amarone: black cherry and plum moving toward dried fruit, cocoa, sweet spice and a warm, rounded palate whose tannins stay soft. The 2020 is young and open, happy with an hour in the decanter.
Serve at 16 to 18 °C with braised beef, pastissada de caval, roast duck or aged Monte Veronese; in Venice it is the sensible Amarone to order when the table wants the style without a cellar bottle's price or patience.
Winery
Bolla is one of the great popularizers of Veronese wine, a house born at Soave in the late nineteenth century that carried Soave and Valpolicella onto tables across the world, above all in America. Its Amarone credentials are older than the wine's fame: the family has bottled it since the 1950 vintage. Today Bolla works from San Pietro in Cariano in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica as part of Gruppo Italiano Vini, and its selections, Le Poiane, Rhetico and the riserva Le Origini, aim at the classical, balanced center of the style.
