About Tenute Olbios

History
Tenute Ólbios is a family estate on the edge of Olbia, in Gallura, on the north east coast of Sardinia. The name goes back to the ancient Greeks, who called the area Ólbios, meaning a happy, prosperous and rich land. The winery occupies an old building that was fully restored and keeps its original granite structure.
Daniela Pinna owns the estate and is also its agronomist and winemaker, working with her husband David. She oversees the vineyards herself, renewing part of them while keeping older plots of native varieties.
The land and the vineyards
Grapes come only from three estate vineyards, Vena Fiorita, Sussula and Piscolvei. The soil is mostly granite sand with a little clay, and the vines are not irrigated, even in hot summers. Sea breezes cool the vineyards, and the harvest is done by hand.
The vineyards follow integrated farming without herbicides and carry the Italian SQNPI sustainability label. The estate covers about 60 hectares.
The wines
Vermentino is the main grape. Lupus in Fabula is a Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG, full bodied with ripe melon and stone fruit, and Bisso is a Vermentino sparkling wine aged 24 months on the yeast. Cavè is a Cannonau rosé with about eight hours of skin contact.
The reds use Cannonau and the rare local grape Muristellu, also known as Bovale Sardo, in wines such as Amur, Nessuno and Cangrande. In Vino Veritas is a late harvest Vermentino fermented in oak and aged about ten years under a veil of yeast, in the style of fino sherry. All the wines are certified vegan.
Today
Tenute Ólbios belongs to the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG consortium, and its fermentations run slowly and cool, with Vermentino at about 10 degrees for 40 to 50 days. The estate welcomes visitors for tours and tastings with Sardinian cheeses and a light lunch. Reds also ferment slowly and age in tank before only a light filtration, so the wines keep their fruit. Daniela Pinna describes the terroir as a cru, and the bottles carry the Green Care and SQNPI marks.
