Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Senza Titolo” 2015
Falstaff 95James Suckling 94Wine Advocate 93
Wine Description
Senza Titolo, without a title, is Musella's Amarone Riserva pushed to its least interventionist extreme, made only when the fruit allows it. The blend is Corvina and Corvinone 70%, Rondinella 10%, Oseleta 10%, Croatina 7% and other varieties 3%, picked grape by grape, fermented on indigenous yeasts at uncontrolled temperatures with daily hand stirring, then aged at least three years in large untoasted 700 litre oak and bottled without filtration or clarification.
The 2015 is rich and structured at 16.3% yet strikingly floral, with cocoa and smoky shadows behind dark cherry and dried plum, a velvety texture and the freshness to carry a decade lightly. Being unfiltered it throws sediment, so stand it up a day ahead and decant with care. Serve at 18 °C with braised beef cheeks, roast game, pastissada de caval or aged Monte Veronese, or give it the after dinner hour it quietly requests.
Winery
Musella lies inside a walled estate of over 400 hectares at San Martino Buon Albergo, on the eastern edge of the Valpolicella, where vines share the land with woodland, olive groves and fruit trees. The Pasqua di Bisceglie family set up the winery in 1995 and farms its roughly 25 hectares biodynamically, with Demeter certification, indigenous yeast ferments and a light hand in the cellar under winemaker Enrico Raber. The range runs from Valpolicella Superiore and Ripasso up to Amarone, Amarone Riserva and Recioto, all built on Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella.
