Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2015
Wine Description
Trabucchi's Amarone brings the Illasi valley's cooler, stonier voice to Valpolicella's biggest wine. The fruit is organically farmed on the moraine soils of Monte Tenda, and the method is the classical one for the appellation: Corvina led grapes dried through the winter on racks, a slow fermentation, then a long rest in wood before bottle.
The house style keeps Amarone's weight on a leash: dried cherry and plum, tobacco, licorice and aromatic herbs with a savory, mineral line and tannins that are dense but fine. The 2015 is drinking beautifully now, its youthful grip resolved, and it will hold for years.
Decant for an hour and serve at 16 to 18 °C beside braised beef cheeks, pastissada de caval or roast game; at the end of a Venetian dinner it pairs just as well with aged Monte Veronese and a little quiet.
Winery
Trabucchi d'Illasi farms the slopes of Monte Tenda in the Illasi valley, Valpolicella's eastern arm, where the family began making wine in the mid 1920s. The estate was an early convert to organic farming, certified since 1993, and works guyot trained vines on stony moraine soils without herbicides, with Franco Bernabei consulting in the cellar the property built in 2002. In recent years the estate passed to the Dal Forno brothers, who keep the Trabucchi name and its quiet, patient style: Valpolicella and Amarone that lean on freshness, herbs and fine tannin rather than sheer weight.
