Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Cavolo” 2020
Wine Enthusiast 94Vinous 94Falstaff 93
Wine Description
Cavolo is Brigaldara's single vineyard Amarone from two hectares at Cavolo near Grezzana, planted between 1996 and 1999 and trained to Guyot, an unusual choice in Amarone country that gives small, concentrated bunches. The blend is Corvina 59%, Corvinone 21% and Rondinella 17% with a small balance of other local grapes; the fruit dries for about 120 days in the loft, then ferments on the skins with twice daily pump overs before four years of aging, two in small barrels and two in large casks.
At 16% it is a structured, elegant Amarone: sour cherry and dark fruit jam, vanilla, dried grape sweetness held in check by fine grained tannins and a spicy, savoury finish. Give it an hour or two in the decanter and serve at 18 °C with braised beef in Amarone, pastissada de caval, roast game or a board of aged cheeses such as Monte Veronese.
Winery
Brigaldara has been in the Cesari family since 1928, centered on a historic estate at San Floriano in the Valpolicella Classica with additional vineyards in the Marcellise and Illasi valleys. Under Stefano Cesari and now his son Antonio, the house earned its reputation for Amarone, including the celebrated Case Vecie from high vineyards, while keeping the everyday wines serious: the Valpolicella, the ripasso Il Vegro and a small Recioto all show the same clean, classically Veronese hand.
