Valpolicella Ripasso DOC Superiore “Macion” 2022
Wine Description
Macion is La Collina dei Ciliegi's Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore, the estate's middle weight red from its high Valpantena vineyards between 450 and 700 metres. As is traditional for ripasso, the young Valpolicella is passed back over Amarone marcs for a second fermentation, deepening colour and adding a dried fruit layer to the fresh mountain fruit underneath.
The organic farming and altitude keep it lively: morello cherry and plum with raisin, sweet spice and cocoa shadows, medium full body, rounded tannins and a fresh, clean finish. It is ready on release and comfortable for several years after. Serve at 16 to 18 °C with bigoli with duck ragù, guinea fowl, sausage and polenta, or in the Venetian manner with fegato alla veneziana; it is also a good match for aged but mild cheeses. Thirty minutes in a decanter opens the shoulders nicely.
Winery
La Collina dei Ciliegi was founded in 2005 by Massimo Gianolli in the high Valpantena, the valley north of Verona, around the small restored village of Erbin. The estate farms about 58 hectares between 450 and 700 metres, unusually high ground for the area, and has been certified organic since 2023. Altitude sets the style: reds that keep freshness and perfume alongside Veronese depth. Besides the wines, the family runs the Ca' del Moro wine retreat at Erbin, making the property one of the Valpantena's gathering points for food, wine and walking.
