Valpolicella DOC Superiore Classico “Sant’Urbano” 2022

Wine Description
Valpolicella Superiore Sant'Urbano comes from the same terraced hill in Fumane that gives Speri its Amarone, picked from mature vines between 280 and 350 metres. It is the estate's serious Valpolicella: native grapes led by Corvina, farmed organically like all Speri fruit, given the extra structure and time the superiore category asks for, and built to show what the site does without appassimento's amplification.
The glass offers fresh morello cherry, red plum and violet with white pepper, a light balsamic note and the taut, stony line that comes with the hill's altitude. It is a wine of medium body and real energy, best served slightly cool at 16 to 18 °C.
At the table it is the most flexible red in the Speri cellar: bigoli in salsa, duck ragù, roast chicken with herbs, or a plate of soppressa and Monte Veronese all suit it well. Drink it over the next five or six years, no decanting needed beyond a few minutes in the glass.
Winery
The Speri family has farmed the Valpolicella Classica since the first half of the nineteenth century and is now in its seventh generation, still working only its own 60 hectares and only the native grapes of the valley. From the base in Pedemonte the family runs a closed cycle: every bottle comes from estate fruit, and since 2015 the entire production is certified organic. The house is a member of the Famiglie Storiche group, and its Amarone from the Monte Sant'Urbano hill in Fumane has long been a reference point for the classical, unforced style of the appellation.
