Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Valmezzane” 2018
Wine Description
Valmezzane is Corte Sant'Alda's Amarone named for its home valley, the Val di Mezzane east of Verona. Marinella Camerani farms its hillside parcels biodynamically between 200 and 350 metres on limestone rich soils, and the cellar work follows the estate's habits: the traditional months of appassimento, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, then aging in oak of varied sizes.
It is Amarone in a fresher, more vertical register: morello cherry and plum moving into dried fruit, sweet spice, herbs and cocoa, with juicy acidity and fine grained tannins rather than sheer mass. The 2017 is drinking well now and has years ahead of it. Decant it for 45 minutes and serve at 17 to 18 °C with duck, guinea fowl, braised beef or aged cheeses; a Venetian match would be fegato alla veneziana with soft polenta. An Amarone for people who want the depth without the heaviness.
Winery
Corte Sant'Alda sits in the Val di Mezzane, the quieter eastern valley of the Valpolicella, where Marinella Camerani has farmed since the mid 1980s. The vineyards lie between 200 and 350 metres on limestone rich soils, in parcels named Campi Magri, Prà Alto, Retratto and Monte Tombole, worked biodynamically and taken into the cellar with a light hand: hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts and aging in oak of varied size and age. The range runs from Valpolicella through the Campi Magri ripasso to two Amarones, Valmezzane and the estate selection Mithas.
