Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico – MAGNUM
Wine Description
Zenato's Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is the estate's best known red, grown at the Costalunga vineyards above Sant'Ambrogio, in the heart of the Classica zone. The blend is Corvina 80% with Rondinella 10% and Oseleta and Croatina completing it; the grapes dry for about four months in ventilated lofts, concentrating sugar and aroma, then ferment slowly on the skins for 15 to 20 days before long aging in large oak casks.
This is the same wine in magnum, 1.5 litres, a format that slows evolution and suits both the cellar and a full table. In the glass it gives morello cherry, prune, cocoa and sweet spice over ripe tannins, with the light bitter almond note typical of the appellation on the dry finish. Serve at 18 °C after an hour in the decanter with braised or roasted red meats, risotto all'Amarone as cooked in Verona, or aged cheeses to close the meal.
Winery
Zenato was founded in 1960 by Sergio and Carla Zenato at San Benedetto di Lugana, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, where Sergio did early, serious work with the native Trebbiano di Lugana grape. The family later added the Costalunga estate at Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, in the hills of the Classica zone, and it is from there that the Amarone, the Ripassa and the Corvina wines come. The second generation now runs the house, Nadia Zenato on the commercial side and her brother Alberto in production, farming some 95 hectares of family vineyards split between Lugana and the Valpolicella Classica.
