“Zeus” Rosso Veneto IGT 2019
Wine Description
Zeus is DianaDes' answer to a rare question, what Corvinone can do alone, in a region that almost always blends it. The wine is 100% Corvinone from a single Guyot trained vineyard at about 400 metres in Mezzane di Sotto, in the eastern Valpolicella hills, planted at 5,000 vines per hectare. The hand picked bunches dry in small crates for about 40 days, and the wine then ages 36 months in second and third passage barriques followed by 12 months in bottle.
At 16.5% it is powerful but exact: spice and red fruit on the nose, cherry and sour cherry on the palate, firm, balanced tannins and long persistence. The 2019 asks for a proper decant of an hour and a large glass. Serve at 18 °C with red meats, braised dishes, duck, pheasant or furred game; it also keeps good company with aged mountain cheeses.
Winery
DianaDes is a young Valpolicella label, started in 2016 by Diana, a professional sommelier and restaurateur, together with the Veronese enologist Daniele Cagliari. The project works through long standing partnerships with growers in the limestone hills around Verona rather than from owned estate vineyards, and the stated aim is precision without heaviness and structure without excess, traditional Veneto varieties read in a modern key. The short range runs from a Valpolicella Ripasso through Amarone to Zeus, a dried grape Corvinone from a single vineyard at Mezzane di Sotto.
