Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico “Vigneto Sant’Urbano” 2012
Wine Enthusiast 94
Wine Description
Sant'Urbano is Speri's only Amarone, made year after year from a single terraced hill, Monte Sant'Urbano in Fumane, between 280 and 350 metres of altitude. The blend is 70% Corvina and Corvinone with 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara; the grapes dry for around 100 days, losing about 40% of their weight, before fermentation and a long rest of 24 months in 500 litre French tonneaux, a further 18 months in Slavonian oak casks and a year in bottle.
The style has always favored balance over sheer size: morello cherry and plum turned toward dried fruit, cinnamon and clove, tobacco, dark chocolate and a firm, fresh spine that carries the finish.
The 2012 sits in a fine drinking window, its fruit deepened but still intact; half an hour of air is plenty. Serve at 16 to 18 °C beside braised beef in Amarone, pastissada de caval, or aged Monte Veronese at the end of a Venetian dinner.
Winery
The Speri family has farmed the Valpolicella Classica since the first half of the nineteenth century and is now in its seventh generation, still working only its own 60 hectares and only the native grapes of the valley. From the base in Pedemonte the family runs a closed cycle: every bottle comes from estate fruit, and since 2015 the entire production is certified organic. The house is a member of the Famiglie Storiche group, and its Amarone from the Monte Sant'Urbano hill in Fumane has long been a reference point for the classical, unforced style of the appellation.
