Valpo Ripasso “Le Poiane”
Falstaff 91
Wine Description
Le Poiane is Bolla's ripasso, the wine that brings a taste of the house Amarone to an everyday bottle. The blend is 70% Corvina and Corvinone with 30% Rondinella and other native varieties; after the first fermentation the young Valpolicella is refermented on Amarone grape skins, as is traditional for the appellation, gaining color, glycerol and a dried fruit shade, and it is bottled at 14%.
The glass shows ripe cherry and plum with clove, cocoa and a soft bitter almond note, medium full body and round tannins; the producer suggests drinking it within a handful of years of the vintage, and we agree.
Serve at 16 to 18 °C with a short decant. It is built for meat sauced pasta, roasts and aged cheeses; on a Venetian table it sits naturally beside bigoli with duck ragù or fegato alla veneziana with grilled polenta.
Winery
Bolla is one of the great popularizers of Veronese wine, a house born at Soave in the late nineteenth century that carried Soave and Valpolicella onto tables across the world, above all in America. Its Amarone credentials are older than the wine's fame: the family has bottled it since the 1950 vintage. Today Bolla works from San Pietro in Cariano in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica as part of Gruppo Italiano Vini, and its selections, Le Poiane, Rhetico and the riserva Le Origini, aim at the classical, balanced center of the style.
