Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore “Marta Galli” 2021
Wine Description
The Valpolicella Superiore that bears Marta Galli's name is Le Ragose's fuller reading of everyday Valpolicella, from the same steep terraces at about 350 metres above Negrar that give the estate's Amarone its freshness. Corvina leads with Rondinella and Corvinone, as is traditional for the appellation, and the Superiore designation brings longer aging and a little extra depth over the straight Classico.
In the glass that means ripe cherry and red plum, a touch of white pepper and dried herbs, medium body and a clean, dry finish that asks for food. It is made for the table: bigoli with duck ragù, sopressa and grilled polenta, or a simple roast chicken all fit, and it handles a Venetian fish stew better than most reds of this weight. Drink it over the next few years at 16 to 18 °C; half an hour open is enough.
Winery
Le Ragose sits at about 350 metres above Negrar, at one of the highest points of the Valpolicella Classica, on steep southwest facing terraces that the enologists Arnaldo and Marta Galli rescued from abandonment in 1969. The family still works the roughly sixteen hectares by hand, without irrigation, on clay soils rich in magnesium, calcium and iron over draining tufa. Altitude and patience define the house: careful drying of the grapes, long spells in Slavonian oak casks, and wines that favour freshness and line over sheer weight, from the Valpolicella and Le Sassine up to the long aged Amarone Riserva.
