About Silvio Carta

History
Silvio Carta founded his company in the early 1950s in Baratili San Pietro, in the province of Oristano, Sardinia. He started with the most traditional wine of the area, Vernaccia di Oristano, an amber coloured wine aged slowly in barrel. Silvio and his son Elio, who has led the company since 1972, kept Vernaccia as a family matter for decades. The business has since added liqueurs, vermouth and spirits, and its bottles are now sold in many countries. The company address is Zeddiani, in the Oristano province.
The land and the vineyards
The company talks about three things it relies on: the land, time and knowledge. The land is Sardinia, warmed by sun, shaped by wind, scented by Mediterranean scrub and touched by sea salt. Time is measured by harvests, by old chestnut barrels and by low temperature distillation. Knowledge comes from study and years of practice. The website notes that Vernaccia is an ancient variety with roots in the island's earliest populations, and that finds from the Punic town of Tharros, a few kilometres from Oristano, point to winemaking there long ago. Its name is said to combine the Latin words for spring and for local.
The wines
Vernaccia di Oristano DOC Riserva is the centrepiece, offered in several vintages including 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006, with older bottlings such as 1968 in special sizes. The range also includes Serenata Vermentino di Gallura DOCG Superiore, Serenata Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, Po Tui Cagnulari and Po Tui Monica di Sardegna, Kusidura, and a Vernaccia Valle del Tirso IGT. The company recommends Vernaccia with desserts, oysters, or bottarga and toasted bread.
Spirits and liqueurs
The liqueurs are Limonello, Liqu, Elicriso and above all Mirto. The company tells a story about the winter of 1939, when myrtle berries helped feed the people of Baratili San Pietro and Elio Carta's grandmother steeped a handful in Vernaccia spirit, which led to the family's historic myrtle recipe.
In 2013 the company decided to invest in distillation, working in batches to bring out juniper and Vernaccia pomace. The result is a line of gins such as Giniu, Pigskin, Boigin and Grifu, along with grappa, a Sardinian whisky, an agave spirit and a Brandy of Vernaccia, which the company says is the only one in the world.
Today
Silvio Carta offers tours and tastings at the winery and distillery, and its wines and spirits have collected awards in recent years, including gold at the 2026 IWSC for its Vernaccia di Oristano DOC Riserva 2002.
