About Ronco Severo

History
Ronco Severo is a small winery in Prepotto, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. It began as a family farm in the years after the Second World War and turned slowly to wine. A listing gives 1962 as the founding year. The name comes from the grandfather of the present owner Stefano Novello, who struggled to plant vines on the rocky terraces.
The land and the vineyards
The vineyards cover about 8 hectares at around 150 metres above sea level, on the local sandstone marl called ponca. The plantings include Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Schioppettino, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Picolit, Pinot Grigio and Merlot.
The wines
Stefano Novello, who worked in wine sales before taking over, rebuilt the family business around low intervention wines and has moved the estate to organic certification. The grapes are picked by hand. Listings include a Friulano macerated on its skins, a Merlot aged in French oak and a Schioppettino di Prepotto.
Today
Production is small, about 30,000 bottles a year, and the wines are kept close to the ponca soil.
