About Puiatti

History
Cantina Puiatti works in Romans d'Isonzo, in the Friulian province of Gorizia, and says it has been active in the wine trade since 1967. Its own description stresses a mix of know how, tradition and a willingness to change, built around a close tie with vineyards, climate and the work of people.
The land and the vineyards
The Isonzo area lies open to both Mediterranean and continental winds. A dry, cold wind from the Balkans alternates with Adriatic breezes, which gives a microclimate that suits northern white wines with a Mediterranean touch. The constant sun and mild swings in temperature help a slow ripening. The winery farms 44 hectares of gravelly foothill land facing the banks of the Isonzo river. The stones and gravel of the river add savoury notes, and the minerals bring freshness. Puiatti follows sustainable practices, using organic manure, rescue irrigation and biological control of insects, along with programmes to bring back biodiversity.
The wines
In the cellar the grapes are pressed gently, at only 0.2 atmospheres, and the must is separated from the skins. The wines ferment and mature on their fine lees in steel only, to keep the balance of fruit and freshness. The range lists Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Friulano, Traminer Aromatico and Pinot Nero, along with a line called Sconfine and three sparkling wines by the traditional method: a Blanc de Blancs, a Ribolla Gialla and a Rosé de Noirs.
Today
The winery's building is described as stern, linear and clean, a match for the style of its wines. Tours of the cellar are on offer, and the shop is run through the winery's own website.
