About Paltrinieri

History
The estate dates to 1926, when Achille Paltrinieri, a pharmacist and chemist, started a small family operation on a plot of land to make wine for the household. His grandson Alberto Paltrinieri, the third generation, took over the direction of the winery with his wife Barbara in 1998. They bet on making a Sorbara from a single variety, a style that was uncommon at the time.
The land and the vineyards
The family farms about 17 hectares in the Cristo area of Sorbara, in the province of Modena, between the Secchia and Panaro rivers. Alberto describes it as a historic area for Lambrusco di Sorbara, and some sources quote 15 hectares for earlier years.
The wines
The best known wine is Leclisse, a Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC. It is made from the free run juice of Sorbara grapes from the Cristo vineyards, with a second fermentation by the Charmat method over about three months. It comes out pale ruby or pinkish, with red fruit and bright acidity. The estate also makes sparkling wines by the traditional method.
Today
Gambero Rosso credits Alberto Paltrinieri with helping to change the image of Lambrusco, by making dry, pale Sorbara from one variety and bottle fermented sparklers. The winery remains a family business.
