About Le Due Terre

History
Le Due Terre is a small family estate in Prepotto, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, close to the Slovenian border. Flavio Basilicata, who had worked as a consulting winemaker for other estates for over ten years, bought land there with his wife Silvana Forte in 1984. Their daughter Cora has taken part in the work in recent years.
The name means the two lands: two plots separated by a road, each with a different soil.
The land and the vineyards
The estate farms about 5 hectares of hillside vines on marl and red clay. Sources say the vineyard is worked without herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and the grapes are picked by hand.
The wines
In a region famous for whites, the couple chose to concentrate on red wine. Their grapes include Schioppettino, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Merlot, with Pinot Nero, Friulano and Ribolla Gialla also in the range. Fermentations start with native yeasts and the wines are not fined, then age in French oak barriques.
The best known bottle is Sacrisassi, a red from the Colli Orientali del Friuli that rests about 22 months in barrique. Total output is around 17,000 bottles a year.
Today
The estate stays small and hands on, with a few thousand bottles from each wine. Visitors can call at the cellar in Prepotto to taste.
