About Hauner
Hauner is a family-owned winery based on the island of Salina in the Aeolian archipelago off the northern coast of Sicily. Founded by Carlo Hauner, a Milanese artist and designer who settled on Salina in the 1970s, the estate is now run by his son Carlo Hauner Jr. The winery is best known for producing Malvasia delle Lipari, a traditional sweet wine made from sun-dried Malvasia grapes grown on the volcanic slopes of the island.
Prices are for take away and shipping. The wine bar serves from its own list.

About Hauner

History
Carlo Hauner, a painter and designer born in Brescia, founded the winery in 1968 on Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands off Sicily. He helped bring back the island's winemaking after phylloxera had wiped out its vineyards around 1900. His own artwork appears on the labels.
After his death in 1996 his son, Carlo Hauner Jr., took over the winery and the vineyards, with help from his wife and sons.
The land and the vineyards
On Salina the family farms about 10 hectares, some owned and some bought from small growers, on steep volcanic terraces close to sea level. One group of plots sits near the winery at Lingua, on the southeast side. Another, at Val di Chiesa in the middle of the island, grows white grapes only.
On neighbouring Vulcano the estate has about 14 hectares planted with newer varieties, including a Chardonnay vineyard near the top of the volcano. Hauner also grows Aeolian capers.
The wines
Malvasia di Lipari is the main grape of Salina. It goes into a dry wine, a late harvest Malvasia delle Lipari Naturale, and the passito. For the passito the grapes dry in the sun for about three weeks; the Riserva dries for around forty days, is fermented in small barrels and aged two years in barriques.
The dry range is varied. Salina Bianco, from Inzolia and Catarratto, is the best seller. Others include Iancura, made mostly from dry Malvasia, a Chardonnay from Vulcano kept in steel, a rosé called Hiera, and reds based on Nerello Mascalese, Nero d'Avola and Alicante (Grenache). Salina Bianco is made in about 30,000 bottles a year, the Vulcano Chardonnay in about 6,000. Vulcanorosso, a Sangiovese with a little Corinto aged two years in barriques, is described by the winery as experimental.
Today
The winery stands at Lingua, built in the 1980s, and remains a family business. Its wines are made in small quantities from small terraced plots, and every grape is checked on a sorting table. Carlo Hauner Jr. now leads it, continuing his father's work with Malvasia on the island's terraces.
