Wines from Dettori

History

The Dettori family are shepherds and farmers from Romangia, in northern Sardinia, and they tie their story to wine as far back as the 1800s. The area is described as the historic home of Cannonau and of Sardinian wine, with over 3,500 years of documented winemaking.

Today the estate is run by Paolo and Alessandro, who plan and carry out every step, helped by the people who live and work at Badde Nigolosu.

The land and the vineyards

The estate is centred on a single cru, Badde Nigolosu, which covers 26 hectares of vineyard and another 20 hectares of Mediterranean scrub. Within it are seven clos, separate vineyard plots, each with its own character. The soils come from three different geological origins.

The vines are bush trained, never irrigated, and all of them are old Romangia clones: Retagliadu Nieddu, the local form of Cannonau, along with Vermentino, Pascale, Monica and Moscato.

The wines

Ten wines are made, all from the Badde Nigolosu cru. Seven are clos wines, each from one vineyard. Two, called Renosu, blend several vineyards on the valley's sandy soils and serve as the everyday wines. A tenth, 18 Settembre, comes from one vineyard that is not yet a clos because its vines are still young.

Fermentation and ageing take place in concrete tanks. Quantities are small and bottles are numbered, and the wines carry the Romangia IGT designation.

Today

The grapes are farmed biodynamically. The family remains on the land it has worked for generations, and the wines are a direct account of one valley in Sardinia.
