About Calabria Wines
Calabria forms the toe of Italy, a long, warm region shaped by the sea on both sides and the Sila and Aspromonte mountains inland. Its most established wine is Cirò DOC on the Ionian coast, a red built on the Gaglioppo grape with a savoury, herbal, slightly rustic character. White Cirò comes from Greco Bianco, and the same variety gives the rare, sweet Greco di Bianco. Cirò has a long history, often linked to the wine once offered to ancient Olympic athletes. Beyond Cirò, small zones such as Savuto, Lamezia and the slopes of the Costa Viola make characterful reds and whites in tiny volumes. A new generation is lowering yields and working native grapes like Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Mantonico with more precision. Altitude and sea breezes bring welcome freshness to a hot southern climate. The result is a region still finding a wider audience, with real value for curious drinkers.

The region is the toe of the Italian boot, sharing a land border with Basilicata alone and the rest girt by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas.
