Barolo DOCG “Vigna Francia” 2022
James Suckling 98Wine Advocate 96
Wine Description
The Barolo Francia is produced entirely from Nebbiolo grown in the Vigna Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the commune’s most important sites, purchased by the Conterno family in 1974. The vineyard sits on calcareous clay soils with a south to southwest exposure at approximately 300 to 400 metres above sea level, conditions that generate wines of pronounced structure and mineral depth. Winemaking follows a strict traditional approach: fermentation takes place at around 30°C with extended maceration, followed by aging exclusively in large Slavonian oak botti for approximately four years. In its youth the 2022 shows licorice root, wild strawberry and violet aromas with underlying crushed stone, while the palate is full-bodied with fine-grained, condensed tannins and a long, savory finish. The wine is intended for extended cellaring and will reward patience over many decades.
