Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2020
Wine Description
Pasqua's Amarone della Valpolicella is the house's classic statement of the appellation, built on Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone from the Veronese hills. The bunches are dried after harvest in the traditional way, losing weight and gaining concentration through the autumn, and the wine then matures around 18 months in French barriques. The style is open and generous: blackberry and cherry up front, then chocolate, toast and sweet vanilla, with soft tannins and the telltale dried fruit note of appassimento on the finish. It drinks well on release without demanding cellar time, which is exactly the point. Decant about an hour and serve at 16 to 18 °C beside grilled red meat, a hearty game stew or mature cheeses; in Venice it takes on castradina without blinking. The 2020 will keep comfortably for several years in a cool, dark spot, and it makes a sound first Amarone for anyone new to the style.
Winery
Pasqua was founded in Verona in 1925 by the Pasqua brothers, who had come north from Puglia, and it remains a family house a century later, with Umberto Pasqua as president and the third generation now at work. From its base at San Felice near Verona it farms and vinifies across the main Veronese zones, above all Valpolicella and the Valpantena. The past two decades have pushed the house toward bolder ideas, from the single vineyard Amarone Mai Dire Mai to the 11 Minutes rosé, and Wine Enthusiast named it Innovator of the Year in 2023.
