Valpo Ripasso “Ciliegi” 2019
Wine Description
Campo dei Ciliegi is Ilatium Morini's Valpolicella Ripasso, from hand picked vineyards on clay limestone soils above 150 metres in the Val di Mezzane, Valpantena and Val d'Illasi. The blend is Corvina and Corvinone 70%, Rondinella 20% and Croatina with other local grapes 10%. After a 12 to 15 day first fermentation the wine is passed over Amarone skins for a second fermentation, the ripasso step that lends flesh and a dried fruit shade, then rests a full 24 months in 500 litre French and American oak and eight months in bottle, unusually long for the category.
Elegant ruby in the glass, it shows cherries in syrup, blueberry jam, liquorice, vanilla and spice over a wrapping, fresh finishing palate. The 2019 is ready now and will hold for several years. Serve at 16 to 18 °C with fegato alla veneziana, bigoli with duck ragù, or grilled meats and medium aged cheeses.
Winery
Ilatium Morini is the estate of the Morini family, seven brothers and cousins who farm 45 hectares in the valleys east of Verona: Val di Mezzane, Val d'Illasi and the Valpantena. The cellar stands at Mezzane di Sotto and the vineyards, on clay limestone soils above 150 metres, are picked entirely by hand. The range runs from fresh Valpolicella through the ripasso Campo dei Ciliegi and two Amarones to the sweet Recioto Septemviri, alongside Soave whites, grappa and olive oil, with farming that leans on sustainability and cellar work that favours long, patient aging in oak.
