Valpolicella Superiore DOC “Campi Prognai” 2019
Wine Description
Campo Prognai is Ilatium Morini's single vineyard Valpolicella Superiore, the bottling where the house shows how serious unfortified, undried Valpolicella can be when treated with Amarone patience. The blend is Corvina 70%, Rondinella 20% and Croatina with Oseleta 10% from clay limestone slopes east of Verona; after a cold soak the must ferments for 12 to 15 days with délestage and pump overs, and the wine then ages 12 to 15 months in new 350 litre casks, 80% French and 20% American oak, plus six months in bottle.
It is full and enveloping for a superiore: black cherry, plum, sweet spice and vanilla over soft tannins and balanced acidity. The 2018 is in its prime drinking years. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, opened half an hour ahead, with duck ragù pasta, roast guinea fowl, fegato alla veneziana, or a rich risotto.
Winery
Ilatium Morini is the estate of the Morini family, seven brothers and cousins who farm 45 hectares in the valleys east of Verona: Val di Mezzane, Val d'Illasi and the Valpantena. The cellar stands at Mezzane di Sotto and the vineyards, on clay limestone soils above 150 metres, are picked entirely by hand. The range runs from fresh Valpolicella through the ripasso Campo dei Ciliegi and two Amarones to the sweet Recioto Septemviri, alongside Soave whites, grappa and olive oil, with farming that leans on sustainability and cellar work that favours long, patient aging in oak.
